Page Text ---------- Local Competition After years of negotiation, The Telecommunication Act of 1996 was signed into law. The Act, among many things, set the stage to allow service providers to compete for your local telephone service. For over 100 years, the telephone industry has been a monopoly where only one FCC and state certified telephone service provider was allowed to operate in a geographic region. There are regional Bell Operating Companies (such as BellSouth) and approxi- mately 1,500 Independent Telephone Companies (such as Reserve Telephone Company ) who operated as monopolies around the country. With the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, other companies can seek state regulatory approval to become competitive local providers. There are four major categories of local telephone service providers. The chart below summarizes the differences between these operators. If you wish to change your local telephone service from your current service provider to a competitive service provider, contact the competitive service provider to establish service. Often you can move your service and retain your current telephone number.
